With plans for five fulfillment centers now revealed in the U.S. and with plenty more presumably on the way, the attention of the industry will be on Ocado Solutions and its CEO, Luke Jensen. Ocado Solutions has leveraged the technologies and robotics developed by Ocado for its own highly successful e‐commerce operation in its native United Kingdom, and it made an exclusive deal to deploy them in partnership with The Kroger Co. in the U.S. Jensen has deep experience in digitizing grocers: His career before Ocado included seven years at U.K.-based grocer Sainsbury, where he, among other duties, led the chain’s technology initiatives, including the introduction of the first mobile self-scanning program in the U.K. Jensen is confident Ocado will succeed in the U.S. because some of the doubt around grocery e-commerce lies in the notion of inferior fulfillment solutions.
