Midwestern powerhouse Meijer set its sights on northeastern Ohio this year, opening new supercenters in Avon, Mentor and Stow. The new 155,000-square-foot supercenters include pharmacies, and the Avon site also features a Meijer Express gas station. However, new stores are also set to pop up across the country in states such as Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois and Minnesota. Not long after the retailer’s first Cleveland-area stores opened their doors, home delivery was added to keep up with the demand of e-commerce culture. Meijer also quickly expanded its Shop & Scan program to the Chicago area and northeastern Indiana after a wildly successful pilot in Michigan. The app was downloaded more than 1 million times in less than a year after going live, and 80% of local shoppers were using the app when the expansion was revealed in March. While the retailer has clearly demonstrated its commitment to today’s demand for more convenient, tech-driven shopping, it has also found success in using platforms such as social media for marketing, having won a Shorty award for its creative and eye-catching Instagram activity.
