Aldi US widens its wine offerings

The quick-service restaurant chain said it saw opportunity to expand in the adult-beverage space.

Vine & Cellar wines, selected by the retailer’s Master of Wine, are sold only online in California and run up to over $1,000 a bottle.

With the settlement, the St. Louis-based grocer admitted no wrongdoing in the case, which stemmed from a 2021 lawsuit involving alcohol pricing.

Both dollar sales and unit sales are up year over year as retailers expand their own brands of chardonnay, merlot and other varietals.

Alcohol will now be available for delivery from the retail giant in Arizona, Georgia, Iowa, Louisiana and Ohio, expanding a program that began in 2019.

The bills, facing opposition from beer distributors and liquor stores, would let grocery and c-stores sell the products if their alcohol by volume doesn’t exceed 17%.

The location, which is the first for the Ahold Delhaize banner in the state, sells locally produced spirits and other beverages.

The new features will further enhance how IDs are checked before alcohol is delivered. With new enhanced dual ID verification in place, the company hopes to create an "industry standard for responsible alcohol delivery."
