2019 Gold Plate Winners Recognized by FMI Foundation

Jimmie Gipson to Retire From Houchens

The longtime CEO and chairman of the board for the Kentucky operator will step down after 55 years with the company.

After careers in football and law, Wright was CEO for Supervalu from 1981-2000, overseeing a period of expansive growth for the wholesaler.

He replaces Kathleen Mahoney, who will continue in her roles as EVP and chief legal officer.

The trio of retail execs were among six leaders honored at the trade association’s 2020 Midwinter Executive Conference in Phoenix.

Six product suppliers were named to the board, along with a new chairman, Randy Edeker of Hy-Vee.

The Midwestern chain, which debuted its Dollar Fresh format in 2018, purchased six former Shopko locations for the new stores.

One of the five retailers selected will be named USA International Retailer of the Year in March.

The retailer said the 38-year company veteran will assist CEO Randy Edeker in negotiating industry challenges. Darren Baty will succeed Brett Bremser as chief merchant.

The successful pilot with Flashfood, an app that allows customers to buy food nearing its sell-by date at a discount, will expand to all of the retailer's locations.
