Kroger, Walmart to Step Up Coronavirus Testing Sites

Food and drugstores are leveraging their pharmacists and real estate to expand testing for COVID-19, further illustrating the extraordinary role retail is playing in the crisis response.

The new virtual platform was designed to deliver an equally valuable experience remotely as is possible with in-person meetings.

The drug chain will operate and rebrand 99 of the grocer’s pharmacies and acquire the prescription files from 11 additional Schnucks pharmacies to transfer elsewhere.

The retailer will transfer prescriptions from the affected stores to a combination of Walgreens, CVS and Rite Aid. It will continue operating 69 pharmacy locations.

Although many food retailers have abandoned the category, there are potential opportunities for the existing players.

The retailer joins InComm Healthcare’s retail network, allowing cardholders to receive discounts on select better-for-you products.

The retailer said it is offering its workers subsidized college programs to fill pharmacy technician and optician roles as retail healthcare demand grows.

The new clinic offers services such as primary care, dental and education in one facility.

The trade group honored the San Antonio-based retailer during its Total Store Expo in Boston.
