Salty snack makers are gearing up for summer in strategic ways—from unveiling new package designs to adding more spice.
Suppliers have momentum on their side; the broad salty snack category continues to grow unabated. For a 52-week period ending May 21, 2023, and reflecting multi-outlet units (grocery, drug, mass, dollar, military and select club stores), salty snacks grew 15.6% in dollar sales while units were off less than 1%, according to the most recent data from Chicago-based IRI/Circana.
A $29.7-billion market, corn snacks were the pacesetters for the salty snack category, with a 30.1% increase in dollar sales and units up 12.8%. Flashing a consistently impressive performance across the sector, all segments except one grew in double digits and ranging from 10.8% to 18.8%. This included potato chips, other salty snacks, tortilla/tostada, cheese snacks, pretzels and RTE popcorn/caramel corn. Only pork rinds dragged down the surge, once again losing dollars (4.6% for the year period).
