In a move to win “share of stomach” from restaurants offering home delivery, Wegmans Food Markets is expanding prepared-meal delivery to more than 40 stores this year through a partnership with DoorDash.
The offering, available through a new mobile application called Wegmans Meals 2Go, has been in testing for more than a year in the retailer’s Pittsford, N.Y., location. It is currently live in Pittsford and two other Rochester, N.Y.-area locations, as well as in Wegmans’ Dulles store in Sterling, Va. The retailer said delivery from two additional Rochester-area stores would begin this week with an eye on more than 40 stores available by the end of the year and even more in 2020.
“We promise to ‘make great meals easy,’ and it doesn’t get any easier than this,” Erica Tickle, Wegmans e-commerce group manager, said in a release. “What’s unique about Wegmans Meals 2Go is the variety of delicious menu options. During the year-long pilot at our Pittsford store, we listened and learned, fine-tuned the app, and created a menu that had something for everyone at home or at work.”
Wegmans said meals could be delivered through DoorDash within a roughly five-mile radius of participating stores. Delivery is available on orders of $20 or more, with diners able to choose from food prepared in-store, including sushi, pizza, wings, subs, salads, soups, Asian, ready-to-heat meals, desserts and beverages.
“Our partnership with Wegmans showcases DoorDash’s focus and commitment to better serve our customers and merchant partners beyond restaurant delivery,” said Casey North, vice president of DoorDash Drive. “Wegmans will leverage our strong logistics platform, which enables them to further deliver on their promise to make great meals easy.”
To place an order, a customer must download the new Wegmans Meals 2Go app. The app will indicate if delivery is an option based on the delivery destination in relation to the store location. Orders can be scheduled for delivery from 11:30 a.m. until 9 p.m. Orders can also be placed for customer carryout or curbside pickup, with no minimum required and no added fee.
Rochester-based Wegmans separately offers grocery delivery and pickup through Instacart at some of its 99 stores. San Francisco-based DoorDash connects customers with local and national businesses in more than 4,000 cities in the U.S. and Canada.
