Chandler, Ariz.-based Bashas’, which prides itself on offering scratch-made daily doughnuts, has revealed the winners of its sixth annual Donut Flavor Contest—just in time for National Donut Day on June 4.
Last month, Bashas’ invited kids and adults across the state to invent a new global flavor for the grocer’s doughnut cases this year. A panel of local celebrity judges selected the winning flavors—a Baklava doughnut and two cream-filled doughnuts—in three categories. Click through to savor in these inventive new doughnuts, which are available for purchase in Bashas’ bakery cases across Arizona starting June 4.
Kids Category Winner: Kinder Joy Donut
Twelve-year-old Queen Creek, Ariz., resident Braxton submitted the winning donut in the kids category. His Italian-inspired Kinder Joy Donut is filled with buttercream, topped with chocolate hazelnut spread and then covered with crushed wafer cookies.
Member/Employee Category Winner: Delirium Donut
Mesa, Ariz., resident Kristine Pearce, who works at the Bashas’ supermarket at Baseline and Crismon roads, submitted the winning doughnut in the member/employee category. Her Peruvian-inspired Delirium Donut is filled with Bavarian cream, topped with chocolate icing, sprinkled with crushed pecans and drizzled with caramel.
In addition to being named Bashas’ Official Donut Ambassadors for 2021, Braxton, Heather and Kristine will each receive one dozen doughnuts every month for a year, and $500 worth of prizes, including a Bashas’ grocery gift card, baking/cooking gadgets and family-fun activities.
When customers purchase a dozen doughnuts at Bashas’ on National Donut Day, they will receive an additional six doughnuts for free. Bashas’ will also donate 10% of its doughnut sales on June 4 to the Salvation Army, which established National Donut Day in June 1938 to honor volunteers who served the sweet treats to soldiers on the frontlines.
