The Kroger Co., Leevers Supermarkets and Dave’s Markets, as well as convenience chains such as Parker’s Kitchen and Loop Neighborhood Markets, are among the retailers partnering with DailyPay, a New York-based provider of daily pay benefits, to offer front-line grocery workers access to their pay as they earn it. With this initiative, DailyPay estimates more than 1 in 8 grocery store workers across the country has access to this financial option.

“We are proud of our amazing staff who has been working hard to keep our neighborhoods fed,” said Taylor Leevers, special projects manager for Leevers Supermarkets, Franktown, Colo. “In addition to hiring dedicated cleaning staff, installing sneeze guards at registers and providing appreciation bonuses, we are also proud to offer DailyPay to employees who want access to their pay on a daily basis.”

By accessing their pay through DailyPay, employees could save an average of $1,205 per year in reduced fees from loans and overdraft and late fees, according to estimates from the company, which has introduced a zero-dollar next-day transfer fee for all employees to remove barriers to earned income access during this critical time. DailyPay is also creating a series of free online financial literacy webinars to answer questions about managing money through the COVID-19 crisis.

Cincinnati-based Kroger is launching ExpressPay, powered by DailyPay, “to give employees the financial flexibility to pay their bills, as well as to buy critical supplies they need to support themselves and their families as their earnings are readily available—not just on payday,” said a company representative in a statement.

“I think it’s a great idea,” said a Kroger employee, who asked to remain anonymous. Money is scarce right now, and in some families with kids, there is just one person working and they need immediate access to their earnings.

Since the COVID-19 crisis reached the U.S., DailyPay has seen an increase in businesses signing on and accelerating launches so staffs can feel more secure during these challenging times.

“Offering DailyPay to leading businesses ensures that families have food on their tables and medical supplies at a time when these items are most needed,” said Jason Lee, CEO of DailyPay. “These courageous folks who are going into work every day deserve to be compensated instantly so they can safeguard themselves and their families. We salute our partners for making this benefit available.”
