A national partner of Feeding America, The Fresh Market of Greensboro, N.C., has announced its Take a Slice Out of Hunger event, which will donate $1 to the organization from each of its new cream pies sold Oct. 30-Nov. 30, 2019. Every dollar raised helps provide at least 10 meals, and 90% of the funds raised stay in the local community.
“We wanted to offer our guests something extraordinary to serve their family this holiday, and these new cream pies are so good, you will definitely want to leave room for dessert,” said Jay Mandrillo, director of bakery merchandising. “We also wanted to acknowledge that the holidays can be a struggle for some, and with our partner Feeding America, every pie sold can provide up to 10 meals for families in need.”
The announcement comes on the heels of The Fresh Market’s recently completed six-month quest to bring its customers the best cakes across America. After sampling about 200 cakes from mostly smaller bakeries specializing in European-style desserts, the grocer selected its top five cakes from specialty bakeries in America. The fab five are Boston Cream Cake, Triple Chocolate Truffle, Red Velvet, Pineapple Brown Sugar and Carrot Cake.
The Fresh Market Names Best Cakes in America
“The Fresh Market’s in-store bakeries focus on bringing in signature items that rival any upscale pastry shop in taste and quality,” Mandrillo said. In addition to gourmet cakes, the bakery now offers new signature cream pies, including French Chocolate Silk Cream and its own-recipe Chocolate Silk Peanut Butter Pie. Those sit alongside made-in-store fruit tarts, which contain up to 2 pounds of fresh fruit, he said.

“Other new items include European-style pastries, authentic New York-style water-boiled bagels, a large variety of decadent brownies and sourdough breads made from scratch every day from an original recipe that’s been passed down for more than three decades,” Mandrillo said.
