Amazon has transported its trademark triple threat of convenience, competitive pricing and cutting-edge technology to its new Amazon Fresh brick-and-mortar supermarket in Woodland Hills, Calif. But the new store offers more than well-priced national brands, Whole Foods Market 365 items and a smattering of tech. There’s an intrinsic "wow factor" that accompanies the new discoveries to be had in-store.
The Shopping Cart of the Future
The Dash Cart is a sturdy, slightly-more-tiny-than-a-typical-shopping cart equipped with an interactive screen and sensors that links to shoppers’ grocery lists, tracking purchases as they are placed in the cart. The carts also feature a tutorial video that plays on the Dash Cart screen, whisking new shoppers through the process.
Alexa, ‘Where’s the Beef?’
The “Ask Alexa” Kiosk is another handy tech feature of Amazon Fresh. While many shoppers will choose to access their shopping list from the Dash Cart or use their smartphone as an information resource, Alexa is available to answer questions ranging from wine pairings, recipe ideas and more. Amazon Fresh is outfitted with three or four of the interactive stands posted throughout the store.
The meat and seafood counter may only stretch for half the length of other stores, but the selections—premade turkey burger patties mingled with mozzarella and herbs, colossal crab legs—stand out. Same for the wine and beer. The section is modest but stocked with solid picks.
Global Grab-and-Go Goodness
The store’s prepared foods area offers a global feast with everything from roasted cauliflower to banh mi sandwiches to chicken tikka masala and chipotle chicken enchiladas.
