Southeastern Grocers, Stater Bros. Improve Pharmacy Services

Initiatives include customized care through Pathstone Health and an expanded generics program

Pharmacy is having its day in the grocery industry as more and more retailers introduce improvements to their programs.

Southeastern Grocers and Stater Bros. separately revealed initiatives to amp up their pharmacy services. SpartanNash earlier this week introduced a new prescription packaging program, while Southeastern Grocers will now offer Pathstone Health Services to all of its Bi-Lo, Fresco y Mas, Harveys and Winn-Dixie customers. The SEG program will provide customized care to those suffering from complicated medical issues such as cancer, hepatitis, multiple sclerosis and Crohn’s disease.

The new specialty pharmacy services include free prescription delivery to a patient’s home or their preferred SEG pharmacy, along with convenient prescription refill services. Pathstone will also provide financial assistance to reduce out-of-pocket expenses, while specially trained pharmacists will provide customized care by offering "personalized check-ins, reminders and expert advice on medication side effects and potentially conflicting medications," company officials said.

"We have listened to our customers and know there are medical conditions that require a specialty pharmacy in the communities that we serve," said Gayle Shields, VP of pharmacy and operations for Southeastern Grocers. "We want our customers to know they can count on us to deliver customized specialty pharmacy care including medications, clinical programs, financial assistance and adherence monitoring all with convenient delivery options. It’s all about putting people first.”

Separately, Stater Bros.' Super Rx Pharmacy revealed that it will expand its Generic Prescription Program by offering two additional tiers to its existing $4 program.  The program now includes $8 and $12 tiers, expanding its list of medications to now encompass 350 commonly prescribed generic medications.

“Stater Bros. is especially pleased to help our customers save money on their prescription needs,” CEO Pete Van Helden said. “Our professional pharmacists are well trained and available to assist our customers with this low cost alternative.”
