When Wegmans Food Markets opens its highly anticipated store in Harrison, N.Y., the inauguration will not look like any opening day in the beloved Rochester, N.Y.-based grocer’s history. Seeking to avoid the fanfare that marked the record-breaking September 2019 opening of its Raleigh, N.C., location, at which some 3,000 shoppers waited in line to be the first inside, Wegmans will not disclose specific opening dates for its Harrison, N.Y.; Tysons Corner, Va.; and West Cary, N.C., stores set to open this year.
In late March, Wegmans announced it would postpone the opening date for its Harrison, N.Y., store in Westchester County, originally scheduled to welcome shoppers on June 7.
“Every year, one of the things we look forward to most is opening our new stores and the opportunity to get to know and serve our newest communities,” said Wegmans in a statement. “Faced with the coronavirus pandemic, the opportunity to serve the needs of these communities is more important than ever, and we are committed to opening the three stores planned for this year. [But] as we keep the safety of our employees and customers a top priority, we’ve had to rethink how we open these stores.”
With the importance of social distancing and crowd avoidance in mind, Wegmans has decided to share only “a targeted timeframe” in which the trio of stores will open. “We believe this will allow us to keep our employees and customers safe, and also give us flexibility to open our doors as soon as possible,” Wegmans added. Once open, the grocer will also limit the number of customers in the stores to ensure it is able to maintain safe social distancing.
All three stores will offer online ordering via curbside pickup and delivery, and Wegmans is encouraging its customers to take advantage of these services. The new stores are at 106-110 Corporate Park Drive, Harrison, N.Y.; Davis Drive and Airport Boulevard, West Cary, N.C.; and Capital Beltway and Route 123, Tysons Corner, Va.
