Will Whole Foods Bowl Over Boulder?

Whole Foods Market has opened its newest store in Boulder, Colo., at 695 S. Broadway. The town, which has become a mini-San Francisco of sorts in recent years—with great restaurants, a penchant for organic and local food, and soaring real estate prices—seems the perfect home for another Whole Foods Market. The company already operates a store on Pearl Street in Boulder, as well as an Ideal Market in town. Whole Foods has deep roots in Boulder, having acquired local natural foods store Wild Oats in 2007.

The new 32,000-square-foot stores features a feast of more than 130 local Boulder County products. In the produce department, local offerings include organic specialty mushrooms from Hazel Dell, organic root vegetables from Domenico Farms and organic fingerling potatoes from Strohauer Farms.

The full-service butcher is available to cut steaks to order, debone poultry and season or marinate upon request. Local offerings include thick cut pork chops from Black Diamond Natural Berkshire Pork and lamb racks from High Country Lamb.

Signage throughout the Boulder Whole Foods conveys as much about what’s in-store as what’s not. Artificial flavors and colors are not for sale in the bakery department, where shoppers will find an array of artisanal baked breads, cakes and cupcakes, as well as vegan and special diet options.

The grab-and-go area also conveys Whole Foods Market’s quality standards, while offering options from Urban Remedy, including organic, ready-to-eat meals, cold-pressed juices and snacks.
