With customer support to move further north, Market Basket has opened its second location in Maine, bringing the Tewksbury, Mass.-based retailer to two stores in the state, 50 stores in Massachusetts and 30 stores in New Hampshire.
Market Basket’s newest location at 90 Rock Row in Westbrook is an 80,000-square-foot anchor of a 100-acre mixed-use development called Rock Row, which features retail, dining, workspaces, residences, hotels and entertainment throughout.
“We came to Westbrook based on many customers inviting us to come further north in Maine. Our Biddeford store is very successful and well-received and so the opportunity to come to Westbrook and be an exciting part of the Rock Row development has worked out well,” David McLean, operations manager for Market Basket, told WGB in an email.
A grand opening was held Aug. 21 for the store, which employs about 350 associates, McLean said.
Market Basket plans to open two more stores this year, one in Lowell, Mass., where the retailer got its start more than 100 years ago, and a second in Maynard, Mass., McLean said. It is also building its first locations in Rhode Island, which are slated to open in first-half 2021 in Johnstone and Warwick.
But first a tour of the Westbrook establishment …
Made in Maine
The Westbrook store has more than 50,000 food items to shop from, including several thousand items that are health-conscious, gluten-free, organic, all-natural, vegan and plant-based.
McLean said It also has a larger selection of Made in Maine food and beverage items, as well as Maine-grown fruits and vegetables and Maine seafood.
At the Block
At the Market’s Butcher Block, customers can find Certified Angus Beef steaks, chops, roasts, burgers and marinated beef tips, as well as fresh never frozen American lamb and Grade A poultry.
Ready-to-cook meats, such as stuffed pork and chicken, kabobs and pub burgers, are also available at the Butcher Block.
Other store features include an in-store fresh cut fruit room; Market’s Kitchen and Cafe for dine-in or takeout; Market Basket’s exclusive Niji Sushi; and a full beer, wine and spirits selection.
Market’s Cafe is part of the retailer’s new store format, according to its website. The Cafe offers a variety of coffees, teas, lattes, smoothies and more, as well as baked good from the bakery.
'More for Your Dollar'
Market Basket prides itself on its competitive pricing, with its slogan “More for Your Dollar,” as seen on this reusable bag.
“We are an exciting store to shop, and customers do not need a frequent shopper card, just honest pricing recognized as amongst the best in value, lowest food prices in the nation,” McLean said.
