Wegmans Food Markets on Wednesday is set to unveil a new supermarket in Reston, Virginia, marking its 110th location overall and 15th in the state.
The 85,000-square-foot store, at 11950 Hopper St. in Reston, is situated in the $1.4 billion Halley Rise mixed-use development, which includes 3.5 million square feet of housing, retail, office, public green and other space and sits near the Reston Town Center Metro rail station. Rochester, New York-based Wegmans signed a lease for the store in 2018.
Located at the intersection of Reston Parkway and Sunrise Valley Drive, Wegmans Reston houses a Market Café, a coffee shop and The Burger Bar, one of the grocer’s popular foodservice destinations. The site will have parking below and residential units above and be accessible from the transit station.
Customers attending the Wednesday Reston store opening will find an expansive beer and wine department, with about 1,200 wines and nearly 500 varieties of domestic, craft and imported beers and ciders.
Restaurant foods, prepared by executive chef Vinny Tacci and his 95-person culinary staff, include fresh sushi, pizza, wings, hot soup, made-to-order salads, subs and Asian-inspired cuisine, among other offerings. And through the Meals 2GO app, shoppers can order burgers, sandwiches and fries for in-store pickup or delivery. A self-serve coffee station—featuring Wegmans’ signature coffee, hot cocoa, and espresso drinks—also enables customers to enjoy a beverage as they shop.
Other store highlights include a seafood department with fish delivered daily from ports on the East Coast, nationwide and around the world, according to Wegmans. The store also features a produce section with hundreds of fruit and vegetables, including ample organic choices, plus a cheese shop offering domestic and imported specialty and artisan cheeses. On-demand curbside pickup and delivery service is offered through the store as well.
Wegmans said the Reston store employs more than 400 people, most of whom will be hired locally.
Earlier this month, Wegmans announced a hiring drive to add associates and managers as the retailer expands its regional footprint. Plans call for Wegmans to open two new stores this year—including the Reston location—and another five are in the pipeline.
Slated to open in the second half of 2023 is Wegmans’ first Manhattan store and second New York City supermarket. The 82,000-square-foot store will occupy space on the street and lower levels of the historic Astor Place building at 770 Broadway. Wegmans entered New York City in October 2019 with the opening of a 74,000-square-foot store at the Navy Yard development in the borough of Brooklyn.
Future store locations include Rockville, Maryland; Yardley, Pennsylvania.; Norwalk, Connecticut; Holly Springs, North Carolina; and Lake Grove, New York, according to Wegmans. The Holly Springs store would be the chain’s southernmost location, and the Norwalk location would be the retailer’s first in Connecticut. Similarly, the Lake Grove store would mark Wegmans’ first location in New York’s Long Island.
Wegmans’ Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic footprint currently includes stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Delaware and the District of Columbia.
