While “strongly encouraging” its customers to reserve the first hour of its modified operating hours (8 a.m.-8 p.m. daily, until further notice) as a dedicated time for senior citizens to shop during the COVID-19 outbreak, Brookshire Grocery Co. (BGC) is also offering a 5% daily senior discount through May 5 at all of its four banner stores: Brookshire’s, Super 1 Foods, Spring Market and Fresh by Brookshire’s. The discount is available to guests 60 or older with valid ID.

Rather than formally allocating the hour block of time for seniors like several other retailers are doing, Tyler, Texas-based BGC is calling on the community to voluntarily help honor the practice. The regional retailer is also asking its customers to kindly offer any senior guests the opportunity to move to the front of the checkout line throughout the day.

“Since 1928, courteous and compassionate service has remained at the core of who we are and what we stand for,” said Brad Brookshire, chairman and CEO for BGC. “We believe it is incredibly important for all of us to be kind to those around us. During these times of concern about COVID-19, we are asking you to join in our efforts to take care of our senior neighbors and others who are most vulnerable. We are eternally grateful for our guests for their support and patience, and to our employees for their incredible service during these unprecedented times.”

Additionally, Brookshire’s, which operates more than 180 stores along with three distribution centers, has waived all fees for Curbside orders through May 5 as another way to assist guests during this demanding cycle.

BGC also addressed its policy with advertised promotions and prices, deals for which are hammered out weeks in advance. “We are honoring our advertised promotions and prices, but please know that our ads are prepared weeks in advance and not all featured products will be available due to the current high demand," the company's website noted. "Also, rain checks will not be issued or honored at this time. We are encouraging our guests to avoid overbuying, as we will be limiting returns on purchases for safety and health purposes.”

BGC is a regional family-owned grocery business that employs more than 14,000 individuals throughout Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas. The company operates more than 180 stores under the Brookshire’s, Super 1 Foods, Fresh by Brookshire’s and Spring Market banners, along with three distribution centers and corporate offices.
