While much of the hype around these massive annual sales events focuses on electronics and other big ticket items, the grocery side has been growing.

Amazon made no connection between the slow pace of its drone program and the ramping up of its ground delivery efforts, but the company noted that the creation of eight geographic delivery regions is aimed at getting deliveries out faster.

A half dozen of the yet-to-open grocery stores are listed for sublease in the Twin Cities area, as well as a couple of locations in Detroit, according to local new reports, lending greater uncertainty to Amazon's plans for the banner.
