Leevers Acquires 17 Save A Lot Stores Around Philadelphia

The family-owned Colorado independent crosses the country to double its size and further diversify as Save A Lot's wholesale transition quietly continues.

The West Coast discounter has opened a new store in East Norriton, and preps for a Mt. Airy debut next month.

The discounter, which celebrates its 75th birthday this year, is keeping an eye on long-term goals and fiscal year 2019 comparisons as it laps COVID windfall and confronts post-pandemic uncertainties.

The retailer has quietly stepped up its rollout of dual-branded Family Dollar-Dollar Tree stores, bringing the single-price point offering to rural towns and strongly outperforming legacy Family Dollar units.

Encouraged by new convenience for shoppers and more attractive shopping baskets, the discounter is expanding availability of delivery service via Instacart to 6,000 of its stores in 46 states.

The sale supports the discounter's pivot to wholesale, while the family run independent nearly doubles its store count with licensed units.

The rollout expands a pilot begun last month in Georgia to about half of the discounter's U.S. stores, ensuring equitable access to online options for lower-income shoppers.

The Boston-area family-run independent known for high-volume stores will flip its three locations—and open a fourth early next year—under the Price Rite Marketplace banner.

Local businessman Jason Word says the move will "open doors for the community" as Save A Lot moves to recast as a wholesaler.
