Walmart raises hourly pay to more than $17.50

That’s about 50 cents higher than the current average hourly wage at the country’s largest grocery retailer. The raises will be reflected on March 2 paychecks, Walmart said Tuesday.

The food retail industry added 5,700 jobs during the month, while warehouse clubs and supercenters continued to lose workers, according to data released Friday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Supermarket giant says most technical issues have been resolved, but UFCW locals are mulling their options.

The Kroger-Albertsons merger, non-union retailers, COVID-19 and independent contractor rule are on organized labor’s radar for the new year.

The grocer has agreed to pay more than $55,000 to 95 employees who worked overtime without hazard pay, according to the city’s Office of Labor Standards. Meanwhile, the Trader Joe’s United union completed another bargaining session with the grocer.

The specialty retailer is looking to fill select positions at its new store at 209 N. 3rd St. in McCall.

The move will spare grocers and other retailers from what industry leaders warned would be a disastrous supply chain situation.

The industry lost about 2,700 jobs, down about 0.1% from the month before, according to data released Friday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The national unemployment rate ticked up to 3.7%
