Instacart wants to make its customers healthier

The same-day delivery platform on Wednesday unveiled Instacart Health, a multi-faceted program focused on boosting sales of nutritious foods to a whole new customer base.

The retailer worked with Latino businesses to add foods such as gluten-free empanadas and grain-free Mexican wedding cookies to its grocery offerings for Latino Heritage Month.

The new market is 20% larger than the 40-year-old one nearby that it replaces and will feature a wide variety of prepared foods and other items.

The Michigan-based retailer, wholesaler and distributor has largely re-worked its executive ranks over the last two years.

Workers at the Williamsburg grocery store on Friday filed paperwork to begin the process of joining the Trader Joe’s United union. Two of the grocer’s locations unionized this summer.

The discounter, which cleaned out its C-suite in July, continues to fill those open leadership posts.

That’s the same number the retailer enlisted for the holidays in 2021. Rival Walmart this week said it plans to hire 40,000 seasonal employees, a sharp drop from a year ago.

It’s a much smaller number than last year when the retail giant said it intended to hire 150,000 largely permanent employees.

Big and small, emerging and established, tech companies are elbowing into the grocery space. Here’s a small sample of the players vying for attention during the first day of the Groceryshop trade show Tuesday.

The on-demand delivery platform is adding Sprouts, Giant Eagle, Weis Markets and Raley’s to its growing list of delivery partners.

“Consumers are shifting priorities faster than we’ve ever seen in the industry,” one food retail expert said Monday during the first day of the industry event in Las Vegas.
