Dollar General is aiming to compete with online razor subscriptions such as Dollar Shave Club and Gillette On Demand with the launch of its like-minded DG Shave Crew program.

Shave clubs have been growing in popularity over recent years as retailers and manufacturers look to repeat purchases and to forge deeper customer relationships. The discounter said its new program would save subscribers 25% compared to other competitors, while helping to promote the retailer's DG Body private personal care brands.

A two-count razor refill costs $3.65 and a four-count costs $6.50 with the DG Shave Crew program. Shipping is free, and customers can schedule deliveries for whenever they would like, the company said.

For comparison, Dollar Shave Club's boxes containing a four-count of razors and full-size shave butter costs $24.70, excluding shipping, and comes every three months, while Gillette On Demand has three choices of razor, ranging from $10 with free shipping, $10 with $2 shipping and $20 with free shipping depending on the razor model, with the every fourth delivery free regardless of model.

Dollar Shave Club also offers upgrades such as toothbrushes and bath and body products included in the tri-monthly shipment for an additional cost.
