Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Meijer opened two new 155,000-square-foot supercenters—one in Fort Wayne, Ind., and the second in West Branch, Mich.—on May 12. The Fort Wayne store is located at 4242 E. Dupont Road and is the grocery retailer's 41st store in the state of Indiana. The West Branch, Mich., store, which is located at 3691 M-55, is in Ogemaw County.

The supercenters will feature grocery, fresh produce, bakery, meat and deli, as well as a floral area and garden center. Other departments will include pharmacy, pets, electronics, toys, sports and apparel. Additionally, a Meijer Express gas station adjacent to both new stores opened on April 14. Both stores will feature Meijer’s Shop & Scan technology as well as Meijer home delivery and pickup services.

“We believe if we’re just another retailer in the community, then we’re not doing our job right, so we are going to work hard to provide the best shopping experience to our customers in the Fort Wayne area,” Executive Chairman Hank Meijer said in a statement.

Meijer President and CEO Rick Keyes said, “We’re very pleased to bring this great new store, and the numerous convenient shopping options we offer, to families in West Branch.”

Looking forward to providing a fresh retail option for both communities, Meijer said these new stores reinforce the Midwest grocers commitment to serving the needs of local families at a time when everyone is looking for more convenience and value.

“Our Meijer team members have worked diligently to prepare for opening day, and we’re all looking forward to providing a fresh retail option,” Keyes said in a statement.

Prior to the grand opening in Fort Wayne, the grocer said it made donations to four organizations: the Fort Wayne Rescue Mission, which received $5,000 for its restorative care programs for men, women and children experiencing homelessness; Clean Drains Fort Wayne, which received $10,000 in support of its efforts to preserve and protect the St. Mary’s, St. Joseph and Maumee Rivers; and the Unity Performing Arts Foundation, which received $10,000 to support ongoing after-school arts and mentoring programs.

Prior to grand opening of the West Branch location, Meijer said it made donations to the following local organizations: the Surline Elementary/Rose City Elementary Schools were presented with a check for $5,000; Whittemore Prescott Elementary was presented a check for $5,000; and the Ogemaw Commission on Aging was presented with a check for $15,000 in support of its Meals on Wheels program.

Looking to expand its sustainability initiatives further, Meijer said it will host its first Sustainability Supplier Summit next month. The Midwest retailer said the event, which will be held virtually June 20-23, gives vendors nationwide the opportunity to showcase their sustainable products—ranging from food to pets to home goods—for Meijer merchants to consider offering on shelves.
