H-E-B announced its latest innovation initiative last fall. The San Antonio-based retailer enlisted IA Interior Architects to customize a renovated warehouse space into a two-story, open office concept that offers a variety of dynamic work areas, open collaboration areas, individual workspaces and more than 50 meeting rooms.
The Eastside Tech Hub is a new 81,000-square-foot facility at 2416 E. Sixth St., in Austin, Texas. The company plans to continue its expansion with a ground-up rebuild of its South Congress store in Austin by 2022.
A Nod to Texas Heritage
The new workspace celebrates the unique identities of both H-E-B and Favor, H-E-B's wholly-owned on-demand delivery subsidiary with an adjacent headquarters. Their Texas heritage is shown in meeting rooms named after H-E-B brand products, Texas landmarks and cities, and famous personal assistants from popular culture—a nod to Favor’s Runners.
Open space and ample sunlight were also a priority for H-E-B and its design partners.
Work Smart, Play Smart
The new space is walking distance to several restaurants, coffee shops, breweries and the Seventh Street H-E-B store, which is undergoing a major renovation.
But the new office space has its own amenities, such as a rock-climbing wall, a coffee bar, a lounge area, a large events space and a wellness center with curated fitness classes, bike parking and showers.
To commemorate the opening of the Eastside Tech Hub, H-E-B and Favor will make $100,000 in charitable gifts to support hundreds of students in Austin and San Antonio via STEM-based summer camps and programs, including Code2College in Central Texas; the Austin Pre-Freshman Engineering Program at Huston-Tillotson University; Video Game Camp at Austin Community College; and Youth Code Jam in San Antonio and Austin.
Investing in the Future
“Having a shared space like this is crucial to both H-E-B Digital and Favor’s rapid growth,” said Jag Bath, H-E-B chief digital officer and Favor CEO. “The Eastside Tech Hub enables us to have a strong tech presence in both Austin and San Antonio, while fostering a better connection between our teams across the two cities.” Seen here, a student in a local technology class.
Better Serve the Community
“As a digital retail leader, this dynamic workplace reflects our commitment to better serve our people and communities. Investing in our schools and children allows us to help build the next generation of technology innovators right here in Texas,” said Bath.
